Thank you to everyone who has been lending support to the people of Haiti in their time of need. A wide variety of businesses have been and continue to provide opportunities to support Mercy Corps’ disaster relief in the area by shopping, dining, and more.
In addition, many Portland performing artists are organizing special events to raise funds for disaster relief. Here is a listing of some of the upcoming performance events that will support Mercy Corps:
Portland Opera Presents an Evening With the Stars of Cosi’ Fan Tutte for Haiti — TONIGHT!
The Portland Opera presents a special Concert of Popular Opera Arias & Ensembles and agrees to donate 50% of the proceeds of the concert to Mercy Corps to help support relief efforts in Haiti. More info: Portland Opera
Songs for Haiti: A Benefit Concert for Mercy Corps — January 21, 2010
Performers at the Thursday, Jan. 21 show at the Aladdin Theater include: pianist Thomas Lauderdale, Cool Nutz, Portland Cello Project, Janice Scroggins, Holcombe Waller, Oregon Symphony concertmaster Jun Iwasaki, with pianist Grace Fong, Broadway veteran, baritone Douglas Webster, Flash Choir, PHAME, the Grant High School Royal Blues, and Storm Large among others. You can see all of the details and purchase tickets at Songs for Haiti.
Blues For Haiti — January 31, 2010
On Sunday, January 31st, at The Refectory, Kevin Selfe has kindly agreed to hand over his weekly jam, and help us put together a show for the benefit of Haiti, and give all proceeds to Mercy Corps…every dime and penny you, dear Music Lover, can spare will go to helping the victims of this horrific, tragic event. In return, you will be treated to the some of the grooviest sounds and ear candy around the Northwest: Jim Wallace and the Housecats, Lloyd Jones, Dover Weinberg, Lisa Mann, Suburban Slim, Stu Kinzel, A.C. Porter & Big Noise, and Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes, have all agreed to appear.
Admission is FREE, but that ain’t what this about…for more details, go to Blues for Haiti
Of course, you don’t need to attend an event or shop and such to lend your support. We encourage you to provide direct support to Mercy Corps for their emergency response to the earthquake in Haiti. Donate here.
Peace.

What is Gustafer Yellowgold?Well, it’s kind of complicated. Gustafer himself is a friendly creature who came to Earth from the sun and is living out an explorer’s life in a slightly psychedelic version of the Minnesota woods. (BTW – Once you combine “psychedelic” with “Minnesota”, you are going to get my attention.)
Gustafer Yellowgold’s Show is a multi-media performance of live music, animated illustrations and storytelling. It has been called “A cross between ‘Yellow Submarine’ and Dr. Seuss.” by the New York Times and Entertainment Weekly praised “‚ĶThe most infectious original songs. It’s like tapping into some pleasure center in the brain- both adult and kid‚Ķabsurdly appealing.”
Basically it fun for the kids and adults which is why this show doesn’t just do the “kiddie circuit” but has also opened for groups like Wilco.
Anyhoo, Gustafer is landing in Portland on January 31 at the Curious Theatre….
And we have a family pack (i.e 4 TICKETS!) to giveaway for that show!
To enter, just visit our Facebook Fanpage and comment on a ticket giveaway post by Midnight Sunday, January 25th. We will randomly pick from all the comments we receive and announce the winner on Monday!

We are excited to head out to Pickathon tomorrow! Pickathon has become a beloved summer tradition for us (in fact Gael’s first camping experience was at Pickathon in 2007).
The 11th Annual Pickathon is bigger than ever but on the rolling 80 acre Pendarvis Farm, it still promises opportunities for community and face-to-face intimacy (with musicians and new friends) that makes this event so special.
In addition to nearly non-stop music, there is no shortage of kids activities. Tickets don’t come cheap but kids 12 and under are free and you get a camping spot with your weekend pass. Honestly, I can’t imagine a better summer event investment.
We will have a booth set-up again, so if you are there please come by. We’ll have free temp tattoos for the kids as well as free “Got Breastmilk?” bumperstickers.
Hope to see you there!

A note from our friend Fara at Sound Roots:
We are so excited to be a part of this great community that has been brought together by our passion for music. Because we are all invested in each other, I wanted to share another passion that is close to my heart: finding a cure for cancer.
My mom, Shelly Feig, passed away from Leukemia just six months after my son (Miles, her first grandchild) was born. She was only 55 years old. This disease robbed our family of many wonderful times and opportunities that we could have shared in together. Although Miles was too young to remember her, his life has been significantly altered by her absence. I firmly believe there is a cure out there and that her life and death does not have to be in vain. I am on a personal mission to raise awareness and money for research so that other families can be spared the tragedy of losing a loved one to Leukemia.
My family would like to invite you to a Rookie Rock fundraiser for the Leukemia/ Lymphoma Society on Sunday, July 12th at 10am at Airplay Caf?©.
My family, our friend Cary Leach and Team in Training (the fundraising arm of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) will be offering up a Rookie Rock class at Airplay Caf?© (701 E. Burnside). Rookie Rock is a happy, upbeat, modern twist on music class for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their folks.
We are suggesting a $10 donation per family but please feel free to donate more if you can. One lucky family will win our raffle for a $100 gift certificate to be applied towards any Sound Roots services.
Call 503.282.9999 with questions or to donate ahead of time. Thank you!

We are also lucky enough to have 5 food vendors at Fernhill Park this year-Aladdin’s Caf?©, Hot Dog Ernie’s, Moutain Ice, NEPO 42, and Woodlawn Caf?© and Pastry. The concert series will kick-off on Friday July 10th and end on Tuesday August 7th with the annual Neighbors Night Out (NNO) Celebration, a unique community event that focuses on community building to prevent crime and fear of crime. The NNO Celebration will begin at 6 pm with a pedestrian and bicycle parade at Faubion Elementary School and wind its way to Fernhill Park, where the festivities will continue with a concert and other fun and educational activities. Additionally, we will be selling Fernhill Park T-shirts at the concerts to raise money for future music, so make sure to bring your favorite T-shirt to be printed upon or purchase a brand new T-shirt at the concert.
Don’t miss the summer fun in Concordia! Mark your calendars and bring your family and friends and a picnic dinner to beautiful Fernhill Park for free, high-quality entertainment!
