Farmer’s Markets? Too Pricey?

This note on the UrbanMamas facebook page recently caught our eye.  They ask:

“I would love to hear people’s thoughts about the different ones, i.e., price differences between them, quality and diversity of the vendors and items offered for sale, etc. I am familiar with the big one downtown, and the one in Hollywood, and I have to say that they have started to seem pretty expensive in the past few years. Are any of the other ones (Lents, Montavilla, Beaverton) any less expensive?”

Now we are big buy local proponents and we love farmer’s markets.  However, we have to admit the first time we saw a dozen local eggs priced at $8 at a local farmer’s market, we blanched. Still, at the same market bargains could be had for local organic asparagus.

So what do you think?:

• Have farmers markets gotten more expensive?
• Are certain markets pricier than others?
• Is pricing a key consideration when you shop at a farmer’s market?

• BEAUMONT Farmers Market – Sundays, 10am – 3pm - Soluna Gril Parking Lot – Corner of NE 45th & Fremont
• BUCKMAN  Farmers Market  – Thursdays, 3pm – 7pm, held at SE 20th & Salmon in the Parking lot across from the Hinson Baptist Church
• HILLSDALE Farmers Market – Sundays, 10am – 2pm in the Rieke School Parking Lot, 1405 SW Vermont.
• HOLLYWOOD  Farmers Market Saturdays, from 8am – 1pm on NE Hancock Street between 44th & 45th Avenues.
• IRVINGTON Farmers Market, Sundays 11am – 3pm, NE 16th between NE Broadway & Weidler
• KING Farmers Market – Sundays from 10am – 2pm at NE 7th & Wygant between NE Alberta St & NE Prescott, in the parking lot next to King Elementary School.
• NW 23rd Farmers Market – Starts on Thursday, June 3rd, from 3pm – 7pm at SE Corner of NW 23rd & Savier in the Con-Way parking lot.
• PARKROSE Farmers Market – Saturdays from 9am – 3pm at  Parkrose High School, 12003 NE Shaver Street.
• MORELAND Farmers Market – Wednesdays from 3:30pm – 7:30pm, 14th & Bybee.
• ST JOHNS Farmers Market – Saturdays 9:00 – 1:00, N Lombard & N Philadelphia.
