urbanMamas is teaming up with folks to hold Back-to-School Clothing swaps on Saturday, August 21, 2010. We have locations lined up in each of the five quadrants, so hopefully you can find a time and place that works for you. Emphasis will be on school-aged kid gear, but there will be a section for preschoolers as well. Some snacks and drink will probably be available at each location. Swap school clothes and gear, and maybe make a few new friends, too. Thank you muchly to all of our co-hosts! Let us know if you have questions & we will try to get them answered.
We just received this from Mercy Corps. We encourage you to make a donation to Mercy Corps and to help them support the victims of the flooding in Pakistan:
I’ve just returned from a three-day assessment of flooding in southern Pakistan, and I can tell you the damage is historic — and far worse than anyone ever anticipated.
Fields once teeming with rice, cotton and vegetables are now completely submerged in water. Hundreds of impromptu tent camps have sprung up on whatever patches of dry land still exist. And tens of thousands of families are on the move, using any means of transportation to escape rising floodwaters.
Already, the floods have affected a staggering 20 million people. And the worst part is that in the region we visited, the waters are still rising and aren’t expected to recede for at least another week.
Your donations are helping us get aid to families in urgent need. Thanks to your help, we’re now delivering clean water to residents in upper Sindh Province and will establish mobile health clinics to serve families living in camps.
As of last night, we’d already delivered more than 288,000 gallons of clean water in the hard-hit Swat Valley, serving about 10,000 people a day. Tomorrow we’ll start distributing the first of 500 emergency food kits with rice, cooking oil and other basics, as well as 330 tool kits to help families rebuild.
With daily temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, the provision of water, medical care, food and shelter is extremely important for these hurting families. Please give today to help us meet these needs.
From our team here in Pakistan, and the flood survivors we are helping, thank you for all your generosity.
