ABOUT PLAY AGAIN: What are the consequences of a childhood removed from nature? One generation from now most people in the U.S. will have spent more time in the virtual world than in nature. New media technologies have improved our lives in countless ways. Information now appears with a click. Overseas friends are part of our daily lives. And even grandma loves Wii.

But what are we missing when we are behind screens? And how does this impact our children’s well being, our society and the very future of our planet?

At a time when children play more behind screens than outside, PLAY AGAIN explores the changing balance between the virtual and natural worlds. Is our connection to nature disappearing down the digital rabbit hole?

This documentary follows six teenagers who, like the “average American child,” spend five to fifteen hours a day behind screens. PLAY AGAIN unplugs these teens and takes them on their first wilderness adventure – no electricity, no cell phone coverage, no virtual reality.

Through the voices of children and leading experts including journalist Richard Louv, sociologist Juliet Schor, environmental writer Bill McKibben, neuroscientist Gary Small, educators Diane Levin and Nancy Carlsson-Paige, parks advocate Charles Jordan, psychiatrist Susan Linn, and Canadian scientist David Suzuki, PLAY AGAIN introduces new perspectives and encourages action for a sustainable future.

The Portland Women’s Film Festival (a.k.a. POW Fest) will be placing a local spotlight on the issue of Child Trafficking and abuse on  September 9th , 6pm at the Hollywood Theatre, with a special screening  of the documentary “Playground” by Director Libby Spears to benefit Caldera and POW Fest Documentary Programming.

The evening will begin with a reception, sponsored by New Belgium Brewing Company, a silent auction and special introduction by Senator Ron Wyden – cosponsor of an anti-trafficking bill in the Senate – and conclude with a special Question & Answer session with civic leaders and Spears immediately following the film.

OMSI is offering two exciting passes for the film festival: The Director’s Pass and the Producer’s Pass. The Director’s Pass ($80) grants the passholder and a guest admission to any film, any time between May 4 and June 27. The Producer’s Pass ($40) admits the passholder and a guest to any four films of their choice. Both passes also include one free popcorn per show. Purchase your passes prior to May 15 and receive two tickets to a special preview of the new IMAX film Ultimate Wave Tahiti.

Regular theater pricing ($8.50 adult; $6.50 youth/senior) applies during the festival for individual films, while shows starting at 6:00 p.m. or later will feature reduced admission ($6 adult; $5 youth/senior) as part of OMSI’s “$6 After 6″ promotion. “Adopted” takes a deeply personal journey into the lives of two families dealing with adoption from opposite ends of the continuum. One family, just beginning the process of adopting a daughter from China, shares a story of hope, excitement, anxiety, love, and new beginnings. The other family’s journey is shared from the perspective of a Korean-American adult adoptee, whose exploration of her adoption experience has been accelerated by the knowledge that her mother is terminally ill.

A facilitated discussion immediately follows the film with Dr. Ally Burr-Harris, child psychologist, and Astrid Dabbeni, executive director of Adoption Mosaic. Materials on adoption-related grief and loss, transracial adoption, racial identity, and attachment will be provided to attendees. CEU & CLE credit is available.

But I really don’t think the question is what to expect from this visualization of a childhood classic. The movie is going to be huge. So the bigger question is what is next for Director Jonze and we have recently found the answer:

I really feel for Kurt Thomas, he missed his biggest Olympics opportunity due to the boycott in 1980 and then…yeah… well…needless to say, there hasn’t been a Gymkata II…at least not yet! Quick, somebody start an ipetition for a sequel!
