Because of alcohol inspired ideas for World Records such as this:
PORTLAND PIRATE FESTIVAL ATTEMPTS TO BREAK
GUINNESS WORLD RECORD‚Ñ¢ ON SEPTEMBER 20
Portland – You know you’ve been dying to wear your puffy shirt, tri-cornered hat and gold hoop earrings. Well, bring it on (along with the required eye patch and sword), because the Portland Pirate Festival will attempt to break the Guinness World Record‚Ñ¢ for “The Largest Gathering of Pirates” on September 20th at the 2009 Portland Pirate Festival in Cathedral Park.
The current record for the most people dressed as pirates is 1,140, set at Heide-Park, a theme park in Germany, on June 2nd, 2007. If the Portland Pirate Festival draws more than 1,500 scurvy scallywags decked out in all their Pirate finery, it will be sure to capture the record for the most people dressed as pirates gathered in one location.

A note from our friend Fara at Sound Roots:
We are so excited to be a part of this great community that has been brought together by our passion for music. Because we are all invested in each other, I wanted to share another passion that is close to my heart: finding a cure for cancer.
My mom, Shelly Feig, passed away from Leukemia just six months after my son (Miles, her first grandchild) was born. She was only 55 years old. This disease robbed our family of many wonderful times and opportunities that we could have shared in together. Although Miles was too young to remember her, his life has been significantly altered by her absence. I firmly believe there is a cure out there and that her life and death does not have to be in vain. I am on a personal mission to raise awareness and money for research so that other families can be spared the tragedy of losing a loved one to Leukemia.
My family would like to invite you to a Rookie Rock fundraiser for the Leukemia/ Lymphoma Society on Sunday, July 12th at 10am at Airplay Caf?©.
My family, our friend Cary Leach and Team in Training (the fundraising arm of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) will be offering up a Rookie Rock class at Airplay Caf?© (701 E. Burnside). Rookie Rock is a happy, upbeat, modern twist on music class for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their folks.
We are suggesting a $10 donation per family but please feel free to donate more if you can. One lucky family will win our raffle for a $100 gift certificate to be applied towards any Sound Roots services.
Call 503.282.9999 with questions or to donate ahead of time. Thank you!

Milagros is proud to continue its financial support of Summer Concerts in the Park. Here is what is happening at Fernhill Park in Portland via the Concordia Neighborhood Association:
Friday Nights in July (10th, 17th, 24th , & 31st ) and Tuesday August 4th for Neighbors Night Out 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Please come and join your neighbors in Fernhill Park for free, family-friendly, high-quality entertainment for the 2009 Summer Concerts in Portland Parks. We are also lucky enough to have 5 food vendors at Fernhill Park this year-Aladdin’s Caf?©, Hot Dog Ernie’s, Moutain Ice, NEPO 42, and Woodlawn Caf?© and Pastry. The concert series will kick-off on Friday July 10th and end on Tuesday August 7th with the annual Neighbors Night Out (NNO) Celebration, a unique community event that focuses on community building to prevent crime and fear of crime. The NNO Celebration will begin at 6 pm with a pedestrian and bicycle parade at Faubion Elementary School and wind its way to Fernhill Park, where the festivities will continue with a concert and other fun and educational activities. Additionally, we will be selling Fernhill Park T-shirts at the concerts to raise money for future music, so make sure to bring your favorite T-shirt to be printed upon or purchase a brand new T-shirt at the concert.
Don’t miss the summer fun in Concordia! Mark your calendars and bring your family and friends and a picnic dinner to beautiful Fernhill Park for free, high-quality entertainment!

Now that the snow seems to have subsided – for now – and everyone in the family is healthy – for now! – we can get back to some kind of routine. My own a favorite ritual is enjoying a family outing (or two!) on the weekend.
We have been hitting a lot of old favorites lately. Last weekend we headed to Bonneville and the Gorge. This Saturday we headed north to Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge.
The wetlands and other areas of the refuge provide habitat for hundreds of bird species. The variety of birds changes every season as birds migrate in and out of the area. In addition to the birds, there are many other animals that reside at the refuge.
We did the auto tour and got out to stretch our legs at the beginning of the tour and at the viewing blind along the tour. This time of year you aren’t allowed to walk on the route or partake in the Kiva trail. However there was no shortage of things to see.
When we do the auto tour, we let the kids be out of the car seats and open up the windows so they can take in the full view. Yes, I know even though we are only traveling at 5 mph or less they should still be buckled and what not but, come on, man…
Anyhoo, we saw trumpeter and tundra swans in flight and afloat on the seasonal ponds. We also saw countless herons, hawks, kestrels, coots and sparrows. A couple of unusual sightings – for us at least – were a bittern and a half dozen river otters frolicking in the water and on the ice.
We spent a couple hours at the refuge but apparently still needed more. After a stop for lunch, we headed to another wildlife area closer to home: Smith and Bybee Lakes.
On Sunday, our original plan was to do some west side exploring and then connect with family in Beaverton. Unfortunately, the family connection didn’t happen because of illness (them, not us! thank my lucky estrellas) but we headed west anyway.
We headed to L.L. “Stub” Stewart State Park near Vernonia. Stewart park opened just last year and although it is only thirty-odd miles from PDX, this was our first trek there.
How was it? Awesome! Mainly because it was covered in snow and we weren’t expecting that. We weren’t really equipped for snow that didn’t slow us down. We had a snow ball fight, collected icicles, make snow angels, and stomped around the trails until we are too cold and wet. Next time we will come prepared with sleds and snowshoes.
It is pretty clear that Stewart park is very family friendly. There is a growing network of trails including access to the Bank-Vernonia Trail which is perfect for family bike riding. The park terrain is forested and hilly with some noted vistas at the hilltop day use area. There is also year-round camping in the cabins on site.
