O Christmas Tree…

j0400148.jpgWhen I was growing up, one of the traditions we had during the holiday season was to pile in the car and head to a rural tree farm and cut our own tree. The day usually included hot chocolate and candy canes and other holiday cheer.
This has been a tradition I have continued with my own family. So you will usually find us at Beck’s sometime in December picking out a tree, chatting with the owners and other families, enjoying a cup of cocoa, and feeding the sheep.

But this year, we are beginning to consider alternatives including going for a living christmas tree. The idea that the tree we enjoy during the holiday continues on as a legacy of sorts is pretty cool to consider…I also like the idea of not have to haul the tree away once it is “done.” We’ll see…breaking tradition can be a challenge… UPDATE: Still haven’t broken that tradition, we just love the going to Beck’s experience too much.

Speaking of trees, one of the many alternative gift ideas out there is having Friends of Trees plant a tree in honor of your loved ones. For $35 Friends of Trees will plant a young native tree in honor of your loved one and send a card to the person you designate acknowledging your gift. For $100 they will plant a grove of six native trees! And if they are a local resident, they have the option to attend the tree planting.
A great gift that lasts more than a lifetime and helps the planet! Something to consider…

Another great living tree option is The Original Living Christmas Tree Company (http://www.livingchristmastrees.org/). You can rent a tree for the holidays, they deliver, you enjoy it, then they come and pick it up in January and then it gets planted. This is my first year trying it and I can’t wait to see how it is. I have no affiliation, btw :)
