Mother s Day weekend kick-offs Saturday, May 12th at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd). Sour Apple Productions, Milagros, and Film Action Oregon are hosting a celebration of motherhood that provides mamas a unique opportunity to learn and talk about the issues that are important to them: Motherhood Manifesto Day!

The day will begin with a Mother s Day Market. Local women-owned businesses that offer creative goods and services with particular appeal to mothers (or anyone with a dear little one in their life) will turn the lobby of the Hollywood Theatre into a fun-filled bazaar. The Market will be open 10 am 2 pm and admission to the Market is free!

Also as part of the festivities, Super XX Man and his band will provide a free live performance at the Hollywood Theatre beginning at 11 am. Super XX Man has released several albums on the locally based mavens of great independent music, Hush Records. According to Bob Boilen of NPR s All Songs Considered, If we re going to choose 10-songs every week, let it be Super XX Man.

The day will conclude with an exclusive screening of Laura Pacheco and John de Graaf s documentary: The Motherhood Manifesto at 1:30PM. The screening will be followed by an unique opportunity to discuss the issues presented in the film with the filmmakers.

The Motherhood Manifesto brings to the screen many of the characters, experts and stories from the new book by the same name, written by Joan Blades, co-founder of MoveOn.org and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner. Moving personal stories combined with humorous animation, expert commentary and hilarious old film clips tell the tale of what happens to working mothers and families in America and how enlightened employers and public policy can make paid family leave, flexible working hours, part-time parity, universal healthcare, excellent childcare, after-school programs and realistic living wages a reality for American families. Admission for the film is $7. Buy Tickets Now!

Local sponsors include Milagros, Purple Moon Child Development, Metro Parent Magazine, Lilaguide.com, Eclectikid, Blueprints for Footprints, Mother Tree Doula Services, Natural Light Photography, Global Sistergoods, Baby Wit, Zenana Spa and Wellness Center, The Bra Lady, Zober Images, 3 Earth Children’s Clothing, Periponchos, Bambootique, and Mother Source.

All proceeds from this event will support the 2008 Portland Women s Film Festival and momsrising.org.
