What makes Portland great?
There is a post on UrbanMamas about HGTV wanting to show what make Portland the Best City to Have a Baby. In considering what a TV show should highlight, we realized that it really isn’t the “things” or “places,” for us Portland is about the people.
Everything that we love and value about our little slice of the world is a result of people being involved in shaping this City and defining its culture. We meet new people at the store every week, and overall here are the qualities we see in Portlanders:
- They are willing to make decisions that support the environment
- They feel that people of any age and origin should be treated with respect
- They are creative and appreciate creativity
- They are open-minded, welcoming, and curious
- They take ownership in shaping their neighborhoods, schools, city and more
- They LOVE to shop local and EXPECT that businesses to be part of the community, not separate from it….and THANK YOU for choosing to think and shop local
Not surprisingly, these are the types of values that make for a very positive environment for families and result in a lot of opportunities for learning, creating, connecting, and community that you won’t find in other cities.
These values were already here when we came to Portland, we came here to be part of something important. We have met a lot of other folks who are new to the City who have come with a similar attitude, namely: To make the world a better place. Truly!
